December 09 - December 29, 2011 (Tucson Marathon Review & Running Log)

I know I haven’t post anything on here for long while, but I ran Tucson marathon on 12/11/2011 morning, then I been travel up and down the Golden State to see my family, started running more now, and getting ready for more training for 2012.  Below is what I have been doing for past several weeks:

Tucson Marathon was the last race for me and it was long over due for 2011 season.  After Akron Marathon, I trained hard and mainly targeted running hills to get myself ready for elevation.  Before the race, I thought elevation change is not change much about my performance; I planned to run very conservatively for the first ten miles, and then increase my pace with downward elevation change to keep me to the end to a new personal best record.

I arrived to Tucson on 12/09 afternoon.  It was nicely warm, sub-70s degree with no humidity.  My college running buddy pick me up and went to the expo to get our packages.

On 12/10/2011, I woke up early and ran out with Tony for an easy 30 minutes jog near his home.  His house is located at a hill top and is about 2800 feet about sea level.  The run was pleasant at the most part; but at the end, I was having hard time catch my breath when we get to the stop at his house.  I was hoping my lungs will be adjusted and ready on race day morning.  Sunlight in Tucson is strong; I felt the intense sore in my eyeballs after the run.

12/11/2011, the race started at 07:30 on Sunday morning from Oracle AZ.  It is a town situated at 4900 feet and it finish at 2700 feet.  Before the race started, I was happening to meet a runner from PR (Jeff) that also happening to know Jimmy Daly.

At 07:30, the horn was blown, and everyone was out.  First we hit a very notable downhill, then flat out for about half mile or so, and then we hit uphill at mile 1.2.  I felt okay in the first two miles, tried not to push out too hard while I focus on breathing in the thin air, and enjoy the most beautiful sunrise I see in my life; then the call of nature kicked in, I had to stand next to a giant cactus and lost about 26 seconds.  Afterward I refocused back to my rhythm and caught up with the group that I was running with near mile 5.  As little I want to admit the elevation kicked my butt, but it was hard to get as much oxygen into my body while running 6:40 pace.

We were running most downhill, then we made a left turn at mile 9.2, and then we ran toward Biosphere II.  Before the race, the organizer promised there going to be a 10~13 MPH tail wind for the second half; but before get to the half mark, you need to run up two ~ three hills toward Biosphere II on 3500+ feet above sea level and before that, the tail wind was actually the head wind.

I made a 180 turn around in front of Biosphere II front gate.  Then I started felt the tail wind…  I hit the half mark at 1h’31m’ and immediately realized that I won’t be PRing.  I kept my pace and breathing as consistent as possible.  Vishal of DC caught up with me around mile 14 and ran along side with me for about two miles or so, and then I felt good when the course reach below 3200 ft, I gradually pick up the pace and drop him behind.  Just before mile 20, I caught up Jeff of PR team.

I thought I was doing well, even I felt the soreness in both quadriceps and my left angle feeling the sore after I accidentally roll a little when misstep when I get out of Biosphere; then the course took me to mile 24.5, where I ran up a small but very notable inclined, Vishal caught me from behind and charged to the end.  Over that inclined, I felt my quadriceps no longer allow me to hold up the pace.  I felt the shot.  I slowed my pace down, way down.  I was in pain for the last two miles, but manage to finished with 3h’08m’35s’ (stopped my watch when behind the cactus) and official time is 3h'09m'10s'.  Tony finished with a kick ass time of 3h'03m' after seven years off from marathoning and under trained.  We are also talking about running Chicago Marathon together in 2012/2013.

At the finish, I felt the physical soreness and emotional torture; I felt like a failure.  All that hard work on hills, on track, on trails, and ran up and down in Rock Creek still can’t complete with Tucson marathon.  I thought I was ready for 2h’57m’, but I wasn’t, not even close to 3-hour mark; I was very disappointed.  However, Tony and Jen were such great hosts, they talked to me about elevation training, and got me out of the blue.  We stopped at In-n-Out for a Double-Double Burger afterward and great brew from Thunder Canyon Brewery in the evening.

If you interested, you can see the GPS detail at here.

The next day (12/12/2011), I went to California to see my family and stop running for solid six days.  After six days off from running and spend lots of time with family, I felt recharged and refreshing; I went for out a jog on evening of December 17.  I was planning to do go easy on Pacific Electric Bike Trail; but I felt good and got greedy; I decided to run an hour instead of easy thirty minutes.  The air was cool with little rain drop, but nothing major.  I logged 8.9 miles for 66m’43s’ for that night and the week.

I still some what feeling down after I got back to the East and only ran four days for week of 12/19/2011 –
12/20/2011: 34m’36s’ for 4.9 miles;
12/21/2011: 44m’22s’ for 6.2 miles;
12/23/2011: 35m’15s’ for 4.8 miles;
12/24/2011: 30m’37s’ for 4.1 miles.

For week of 12/26/2011, I shake off the blue and started running more, since I am going to start training soon for Gansset Marathon; I ran –
12/26/2011: 60m’29s’ for 8.3 miles;
12/28/2011: 37m’24s’ for 5.2 miles;
12/29/2011: 52m’14s’ for 7.2 miles;

And I am planning to run very easy for next two days before New Years Day 5K.

November 30 - December 2, 2011

11/30/2011 - I ran the last workout on track.  The plan was run 3x2-miler at 13m'40s', 13m'30s', & 13m'20s' with 3 minutes break in between.  I hit split every 800s and I ran -

One miles warm up at 9m'01s'
   [3m'05.01s', 3m'16.35s', 3m'09.37s', 3m'00.53s'] = 12m'31.26s'
   [3m'06.79s', 3m'07.07s', 3m'01.20s', 3m'04.40s'] = 12m'18.92s'
   [3m'00.40s', 3m'04.27s', 3m'03.64s', 3m'01.43s'] = 12m'09.74s'
One miles warm down at 10m'01s'

I logged eight miles for the day with 56m'03s'.

12/01/2011 - I was a bit sore from Wednesday night track work and I been running six days in the row; probably not a very good idea since I am tapering for marathon.  Therefore, I decided to run the exactly same route as 11/29, which ran mostly on grass from White House and loop around Tidal Basin; thanks to Tree Lighting ceremony, every point of entry for grass running was block.  I ended up running 50/50 between grass and road.  I finished the run with a time of 32:55 approx. 4.6 miles.

12/02/2011 - I think I am taking a day off from running; it would be great idea to be off, since running for seven days straight with tapering for marathon.

Then I’m going to run easy on Saturday morning and run about 10 miles “long” from Riley Lock.  Tucson marathon will be here before I know it...

November 22 – November 29, 2011

11/21/2011 – I took the day off from running.  I felt much stronger this time round compared to my recent 21+ miles long run.
11/22/2011 – I jogged with M Berry in and out of RCP for 37m’06s’ approx. 5.5 miles during lunch hour.
11/23/2011 – I went down Wotton High School after work and join MCRRC group for a very light workout.  Arturo doesn’t recommend me to run any hard track workout soon after any 19+ miles long run; so that’s why I decide to run what MC guys decide to do and tail behind them.  They decided to run 16x300 meter with 100 meter recovery jog.  Time rolled around and we started it.  I made split every 400s include recovery jog, they are 2m'37s', 1m'58s', 2m'00s', 1m'58s', 2m'02s', 1m'58s', 2m'04s', 2m'07s', 2m'01s', 2m'06s', 2m'04s', 2m'11s', 2m'21s', 2m'08s', 2m'03s'.
11/24/2011 – Thanksgiving Day and I took a day off as from running.  I gone to a friend’s penthouse for a meal on a 17-pound big bird.  Great food and exellent wine, but I can't drink more than I should be...
11/25/2011 – It was beautiful day for running and weather was unseasonably warm.  I ran around Aspen Hill neighborhood and MH Trail for 30m’26s’ approx. 4.1 miles.
11/26/2011 – I got myself out to Seneca Creek State Park early in the morning for Turkey Burnoff 10 Miler race.  I did two miles as warm up and thought I was ready for this tempo workout (race rather).  As “GO” was called, we charge out with several out-of-towners down the course.  I ran this race course annually and thought I should know better; but I (and we) still follow those lead guys ran toward the park entry.  OH NO!  Bad mistake!  We ran extra 0.1 mile down to hill and realized we made a mistake; about twenty of us in the lead pack rejoined the main course and mixed into the slower pack.  However, I get to passed lots of people…
That was first mistake I made in this race.  Second mistake I made for this race was tied my laces too tight and I lost about 33 seconds to fix it up at mile 3.  However, since I was planning to race the race and still ran a solid 10 miles tempo run and finished with an official time of 1h’04m’54s’.  I jog about 9m’24s’ approx. 1.2 mile as warm down.  I logged about 13.7 miles for the day.
11/27/2011 – I was somewhat sore when after Saturday’s race, but still ran very easy for 43m’41s’, approx. 6.1 miles in Aspen Hill neighborhood and MH Trail.
11/28/2011 – At lunch, I jog down to East Potomac Park and did a mild tempo run.  The plan was run 2x2 miles around 6m’40s’ – 6m’30s’ pace.  Then I ran first 2-miler at 13m’00s’ [6m’30s’ + 6m’30s’] and second set at 12m’55s’ [6m’29s’ + 6m’26s’].  I was happy.  I ran total of 52m’12s’ approx. 7.8 miles with workout, warm up, and warm down.
11/29/2011 – I felt my hammy are sore from Monday’s run.  I jog around grassy area in Tidal Basin very easy for 34m’33s’ approx. 4.9 miles.
Tomorrow is my last track workout for Tucson marathon and for 2011.  It is ten days away till race day...

November 19 – November 21, 2011

11/19/2011 – It was good day with good weather.  I ran around Matthew Hanson Trail for 38m’05s’, approx. 4.7 miles; very easy and relax.
11/20/2011 – I had my alarm to goes off at 05:30, but I pressed snooze and went to sleep; then didn’t get out of bed till 06:15.  By the time I get myself together and drove to Susanna Lane is already 07:20.  I was late.  I was late to start my run, so late that traffice will pick up in G-town if I ran up Wisconsin Avenue from K at 08:30.  Good planning, but bad execution.  Oh well, plan change.
Since I couldn’t run up Wisconsin, then I picked my route on hillier portion of Rock Creep Park with two loops of zoo-loop, via Tilden St.  Detail is here.  Before the weekend, I was planning to run a solid 21-miler; but I actually ran 23.1 miles, but I used less time to covered same ground compare to 11/30/2011 (ran 23.8 miles with 3h'01m').   I finished with 62 mile for the week.
However, I think this long run means I am stronger than three weeks ago and I know I will be ready for Tucson Marathon.  Now, I am officially into taper...

Here is a small piece of insight for the 2012 and 2013 fall race schedule.  By looking at the calendar, my (annualized) birthday is on a Saturday of 2012 and a Sunday of 2013.  That means I MUST run a marathon on each of those days.  I hope they have more races open up by the time comes.  Feel free to post a comment or suggestion if you think of a good race and idea...

September 29 – October 6, 2011

I wasn’t as painful as I used to after marathon, but I still took several days off after Akron without any running.  I think it probably because my body adopts the punishment after 15 marathons.  Whatever that was, I felt able to move freely on Thursday morning; but I gone out for a very easy and control jog for 37:30 during lunch hour cautiously and same easy run on Friday for 40:50.  Then I took 10/01 off as precaution and iced a lot.

On 10/02, I felt great on morning when I roll out of bed and decide to run around Aspen Hill for about an easy hour long run.  The plan was going to run very easy for an hour or 9 miles; but I turned out to ran 11.6 miles for 1h’21m’18s’, averaging 6m’59s’ per mile; it is not an “easy” run I had in mind, but I didn’t feel I was pushing hard, probably my legs were hungry for speed.  However, I still stretch very well afterward and make sure I iced any ache and pain down.

It was only about a week after Akron, so I planned a somewhat easy, but intense week for 10/03 – 10/09: easy on runs, but add in more miles.

10/03/2011 – I felt great after Sunday’s long run, so I gone out for 42:48, approx. 6.2 miles; little too fast again for "easy" run.

10/04/2011 – I ran for 63:39, approx. 9.0 miles.

10/05/2011 – I had some bumps at work the supervisor and got me burn-up, gone out for a run in the RCP trail for 37:42, approx. 5 miles.  I felt little better afterward.

10/06/2011 – I understand we all need to work professionally and I have been get my work done before I head out for run during lunch hour; but I can’t just wait around for your “what-if” questions out of blue to cut my runs short or wait for nothing…  come on!  I understand some of you enjoy having a Big Bone Behind, but it doesn’t mean I need to become as one of you; then have cancer, and/or eventually will die from too much sugar/fat or too BIG of Bone...

I ran somewhat hard today, harder than I wanted to, but I felt great afterward; ran 56:08 approx. 8 miles, then stretch well afterward.

I think I more than likely will take 10/07/2011 off from running.  I planning to run 15 miles on Saturday morning and run Cross County on the Farm on Sunday morning.  After reading Dane’s 2008 Tucson Marathon review, I think I will need to run the hilly portion of this route (http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=4675503) in the coming 21-miler and 23-miler to get myself better prepare and Tucson Marathon is about ten weeks away.
